About FYM

Free Your Mind Mental Health Society (FYM) is a youth-led not-for-profit organization. Mental health is a universal topic that deserves a level of awareness we have yet to achieve. FYM promotes mindful lifestyles that focus on well-being and happiness. We deliver meaningful education to the Canadian public while amplifying genuine youth voice.

FYM is dedicated to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across its programs. We are committed to anti-oppression in multiple forms, including de-colonization, anti-racism, and anti-ableism. Our team includes people identifying as racialized, queer, transgender, neurodivergent, disabled, and foreign-born. We are always welcoming new volunteers who embody a range of lived experiences.

Description

An IT Volunteer plays a key role in supporting Free Your Mind’s mission to raise awareness and create meaningful conversations around youth mental health in Canada by ensuring the organization’s digital infrastructure runs smoothly and securely. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about technology, eager to learn, and committed to helping teams operate effectively in a virtual environment.

As an IT Volunteer, you will work collaboratively with peers and other Free Your Mind teams to maintain and enhance the organization’s digital presence. This includes updating the website, assisting with virtual event setup, managing cybersecurity across platforms, and troubleshooting technical issues. The role emphasizes problem-solving, technical skills, and attentive collaboration. Members will be encouraged to contribute their expertise while also being receptive to guidance and learning from others, including the Director of IT to which the IT team reports. The collaborative environment nurtures both personal growth and the development of practical skills in website management, digital security, and IT support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the technical backend of our email marketing platform (e.g., Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot). Responsibilities include list hygiene, segmentation, building automated workflows, troubleshooting deliverability and rendering issues, and ensuring CAN-SPAM/GDPR compliance.

  • Serve as the internal point of contact for all WordPress-related technical tickets. Troubleshoot and resolve issues with plugins, themes, core updates, page builders, forms, and user permissions. Perform routine maintenance and security updates.

  • Efficiently triage, prioritize, and resolve support tickets and requests from the marketing and content teams related to email campaigns and website functionality.

  • Provide technical build-out and QA support for email campaigns, including template setup, list targeting, A/B testing configuration, and performance reporting.

  • Execute non-design website updates such as content publishing support, media uploads, redirect creation, and basic configuration of SEO/analytics plugins.

  • Create clear, step-by-step guides and documentation for common processes. Provide basic training to team members on using the email platform and WordPress content management system.

  • Act as the liaison with external vendors for advanced email or web hosting support when issues exceed internal scope.

  • Collaborate with the IT Director to break down initiatives into granular stories. Facilitate estimation sessions using T-Shirt sizing (XS, S, M, L, XL) for high-level backlog grooming and the Fibonacci sequence (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) for precise sprint story pointing, ensuring a shared understanding of complexity and effort.

  • Generate and distribute key Agile metrics from GitHub (velocity, burndown charts, cumulative flow) to provide visibility into team capacity, predictability, and potential blockers for stakeholders.

  • Configure and maintain GitHub Project boards, automation rules, labels, and workflows to match the team’s process (Scrum/Kanban). Ensure data integrity and that the board accurately reflects the current state of work.
