Co-Director of Events

About FYM

Free Your Mind Mental Health Society (FYM) is a youth-led not-for-profit organization. Mental health is a universal topic that deserves a level of awareness we have yet to achieve. FYM promotes mindful lifestyles that focus on well-being and happiness. We deliver meaningful education to the Canadian public while amplifying genuine youth voice.

FYM is dedicated to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across its programs. We are committed to anti-oppression in multiple forms, including de-colonization, anti-racism, and anti-ableism. Our team includes people identifying as racialized, queer, transgender, neurodivergent, disabled, and foreign-born. We are always welcoming new volunteers who embody a range of lived experiences.

Description

We are recruiting a Co-Director of Events, who will collaboratively lead a small team of youth to plan, organize, and execute public-facing engagements. The final appointment will be determined collaboratively between Free Your Mind’s executive leadership and the existing Director of Events.

The Co-Directors of Events work together to manage the Events Team’s activities. All Events Team volunteers shed light on mental health struggles from a youth perspective. We address social justice topics (e.g., housing insecurity, LGBTQ+ rights, responsible leadership) using a nuanced, evidence-based approach. We produce initiatives built with, not for, the local community. As Co-Director of Events, your role is to support Events Team volunteers in their daily tasks. You will take the lead in scheduling and facilitating weekly meetings, where general volunteers brainstorm events, share progress updates, and receive feedback from yourself and each other on their work. In between meetings, Events Team volunteers may learn to conduct research, build budgets, and complete grants, depending on the initiatives they are producing, and may require mentorship from you. You are also responsible for planning any additional meetings that you feel supports the team, such as a virtual social night.

As a team director, you will work closely with FYM’s executive leadership. You are responsible for attending monthly meetings with other FYM directors and providing updates on your team’s progress and needs. You should regularly check in with Events Team members, gauge their needs, and bring requests for support to the executive leadership as needed. You may connect with other team leads, with the potential of initiating cross-team collaboration. Please recognize that this role description is not a comprehensive list of everything the Co-Director of Events is meant to oversee — this is a framework, which may change over time, and as the needs of the Events Team evolve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Co-lead the Events Team, specifically managing either the Community Initiatives (CI) group or the Keystone Projects (KP) group, in partnership with the other Co-Director.

  • Schedule, facilitate, and lead weekly team meetings to brainstorm event ideas, share project updates, and provide constructive feedback.

  • Mentor, support, and empower a small team of youth volunteers in their daily tasks and professional development.

  • Oversee the planning, organization, and execution of all public-facing engagements for your designated group (CI or KP).

  • For the CI Group: Produce smaller-scale events (e.g., webinars, roundtables, campaigns) approximately once every three months.

  • For the KP Group: Lead the year-long development and execution of a single, major in-person open-air event focused on mental health resources and community dialogue.

  • Ensure all initiatives are built with the community, evidence-based, and address mental health from a youth perspective, including related social justice topics.

  • Work closely with the other Co-Director of Events to ensure cohesive strategy and resource sharing across both event groups.

  • Attend and actively participate in monthly executive leadership meetings, providing updates on team progress, needs, and challenges.

  • Foster cross-team collaboration by connecting with other FYM department leads (e.g., IT, Finance, General Volunteers) to support event initiatives.

  • Guide volunteers in developing event-related skills, which may include research, budget creation, and grant writing.

  • Plan additional team activities, such as virtual socials or training sessions, to support volunteer engagement and team cohesion.

  • Regularly check in with team members to gauge morale, identify support needs, and advocate for those needs with executive leadership.

  • Maintain flexibility and adapt the role’s framework as the needs of the Events Team and the organization evolve over time.
